About Queluz National Palace

  • Once the summer residence of the Portuguese royal family, Queluz National Palace is one of the most beautiful examples of 18th-century architecture in Portugal. Often called the “Portuguese Versailles,” it blends Baroque, Rococo and early Neoclassical styles.

Commissioned in 1747 by Dom Pedro (later King Pedro III), the palace grew into a stage for court life, celebrations and diplomacy. After a fire destroyed the royal family’s residence at Ajuda in 1794, Queluz became the monarchy’s official home until 1807, when the royal court fled to Brazil ahead of the French invasion.

Beyond its ornate interiors, the palace is surrounded by vast formal gardens designed for royal leisure and grand outdoor events.

Dining at Queluz National Palace

  • There’s a relaxed on-site café for coffee, pastries and light bites before or after exploring the palace and gardens.

For something more substantial, the former royal kitchen is now home to Cozinha Velha, a restaurant serving classic Portuguese dishes inside the historic Pousada Palácio de Queluz.

If you’d rather eat in town, Queluz itself is a few minutes’ walk away and has several budget-friendly local restaurants.

Accessibility at Queluz National Palace

  • Manual, foldable wheelchairs can be reserved in advance, along with traction equipment that makes it easier to move across outdoor pathways - this equipment stays outdoors, since it isn’t suitable for the palace’s protected interior floors.

Ramped routes lead into most interior rooms, and the upper gardens, including the Malta Garden and the Hanging Garden.

Assistance dogs are welcome when properly identified, and accessible toilets are available on site.

Souvenir Store at Queluz National Palace

  • The Palace Store, located within the grounds, stocks a well-chosen range of items inspired by the palace’s history and Portuguese craftsmanship - think azulejo-style tiles, filigree jewellery, porcelain and cork goods, alongside books on the palace’s architecture and gardens.

It’s open daily from around 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM (with reduced hours on major holidays), and you don’t need a palace ticket to browse.
